The mistake is almost never in the calculations. It\u2019s in what no one told you before you chose the construction system.  <\/em><\/div><footer><div class=\"uagb-blockquote__author-wrap uagb-blockquote__author-at-left\"><cite class=\"uagb-blockquote__author\">Joan Juanola<\/cite><\/div><\/footer><\/blockquote><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-separator uagb-block-77b52559\"><div class=\"uagb-separator-spacing-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-uagb-separator__inner\" style=\"--my-background-image:\"><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-93dcd06d\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\"><strong>ERROR No. 1<\/strong>:<\/mark> <strong>Calculating the construction timeline by counting only the days of actual work<\/strong><\/h2><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When a developer or site manager draws up a schedule, they usually plan for the days set aside to erect the structure and then move on to the next phase. The mistake lies in forgetting the periods when the site isn\u2019t ready,<strong> work can\u2019t proceed, and, therefore, progress stalls<\/strong>. That <strong>lost time isn\u2019t <\/strong>just a matter of days piling up\u2014it also causes the work to lose momentum. The time it takes to get back up to speed after each stoppage reduces the number of effective workdays, so we end up needing more days than we would have anticipated if there hadn\u2019t been any interruptions.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Certain construction methods require that, once the structure is completed, <strong>work cannot proceed on the floor for weeks<\/strong>. The floor slabs are shored up. The trades responsible for installations, partition walls, and finishes cannot begin work. The schedule is delayed, crane and scaffolding rentals are extended, and the risk of delivery penalties begins to loom.   <\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-blockquote uagb-block-ecff5f38 uagb-blockquote__skin-border uagb-blockquote__stack-img-none\"><blockquote class=\"uagb-blockquote\"><div class=\"uagb-blockquote__content\"><em>Before choosing your structural system, ask yourself: \u201cHow can I ensure that the structure can be assembled without interruptions?\u201d and \u201cHow many days will it take before the next trade can begin working on the structure?\u201d That answer is worth more than any material price per metric ton. <\/em><\/div><footer><div class=\"uagb-blockquote__author-wrap uagb-blockquote__author-at-left\"><\/div><\/footer><\/blockquote><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"margin-top:20px\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/jansametal.com\/en\/jansbuild\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"4253\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\">dry-assembly systems<\/mark><\/a> allow other trades to gain immediate access as soon as an area is completed. This minimizes the time the structure holds up construction work. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"margin-bottom:30px\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\">ERROR No. 2:<\/mark> <strong><strong>Estimating the cost of the structure without accounting for the days lost between activities\u2014foundation, structure, and other items<\/strong>. <\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today more than ever,<strong> time is money<\/strong>. <strong>Every day of construction involves significant expenditure in terms of resources and infrastructure costs,<\/strong> but above all, the time spent on the structure has a direct and very costly consequence: it determines the delay and cost of all other aspects of the project.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In many projects, the structural work accounts for no more than 20% of the total budget. And yet, it can significantly influence the cost of other project components\u2014a cost that could be significantly reduced if the structural design were approached with <strong>a focus on time and precision.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The paradox is that the structural system is often chosen based on the price of the material, without taking into account the savings or increases in time and cost associated with other components.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-blockquote uagb-block-e8f39733 uagb-blockquote__skin-border uagb-blockquote__stack-img-none\"><blockquote class=\"uagb-blockquote\"><div class=\"uagb-blockquote__content\"><em><em>The true cost of a structure is not its weight or its price, but rather the savings it generates in terms of <strong>time and money<\/strong>. A structural system based on<strong> effective use of time,<\/strong> when utilized properly, <strong>significantly reduces the overall construction costs<\/strong> and lowers the cost <strong>of<\/strong> each of the following line items. <\/em><\/em><\/div><footer><div class=\"uagb-blockquote__author-wrap uagb-blockquote__author-at-left\"><\/div><\/footer><\/blockquote><\/div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\" style=\"margin-top:20px\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/jansametal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/diseno_estructural-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15806\" style=\"width:600px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jansametal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/diseno_estructural-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/jansametal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/diseno_estructural-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jansametal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/diseno_estructural-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/jansametal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/diseno_estructural.jpg 1448w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\">ERROR No. 3:<\/mark> <strong><strong>Assuming that structural quality depends on the skill of the workers on site<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In construction, there is one factor that rarely appears in contracts but that determines the final outcome: <strong>the skill and competence of the workers carrying out the project<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Systems that are built entirely on-site\u2014with mixtures, pours, formwork, and rebar assembled at the construction site\u2014introduce an intrinsic variability that is difficult to control. The result depends on the weather that day, the truck that arrived late, the foreman\u2019s experience, and dozens of other factors that do not appear on any blueprint. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Systems that are manufactured<a href=\"https:\/\/jansametal.com\/en\/jansa-process\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"10151\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\"><strong> entirely in a factory<\/strong><\/mark><\/a>, through an industrialized process under controlled conditions, using <a href=\"https:\/\/jansametal.com\/en\/structural-calculation\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"4282\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\"><strong>precision machinery<\/strong><\/mark><\/a> and formalized quality inspections, eliminate that element of chance. By the time the material arrives on-site, its quality is already guaranteed. All that remains on-site is assembly.  <\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-blockquote uagb-block-159c4da9 uagb-blockquote__skin-border uagb-blockquote__stack-img-none\"><blockquote class=\"uagb-blockquote\"><div class=\"uagb-blockquote__content\"><em><em><em>The question isn&#8217;t whether your supplier has good workers. The question is: What part of the quality process takes place at the factory, and what part takes place on-site? The more that happens at the factory, the less risk there is on-site.  <\/em><\/em><\/em><\/div><footer><div class=\"uagb-blockquote__author-wrap uagb-blockquote__author-at-left\"><\/div><\/footer><\/blockquote><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\">ERROR No. 4:<\/mark> <strong><strong><strong>Choosing a structure that works for the project today but will actually hinder it tomorrow<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A structure doesn&#8217;t last five years. It lasts fifty or more. And what is a logistics warehouse today may need modifications\u2014such as openings, mezzanines, canopies, and so on\u2014in ten years. What is a storage facility today may need to be converted into office space, laboratories, or who knows what.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mistake is to choose inflexible structural systems that require <strong>columns every few meters or load-bearing walls that fragment the interior space<\/strong>. These are solutions that solve today\u2019s problems but limit future options. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Modern construction requires <a href=\"https:\/\/jansametal.com\/en\/estructuras-singulares-janstil\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"4247\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\"><strong>open and flexible floor plans<\/strong><\/mark><\/a>. Not only for aesthetic reasons, but also because the use of buildings is changing. A system that allows for <a href=\"https:\/\/jansametal.com\/en\/vigas-armadas-prs-jansbeam\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"4263\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\"><strong>large spans with slender profiles<\/strong><\/mark><\/a> turns any floor plan into a blank canvas that can be reconfigured without altering the structure.  <\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-blockquote uagb-block-3fcb14ea uagb-blockquote__skin-border uagb-blockquote__stack-img-none\"><blockquote class=\"uagb-blockquote\"><div class=\"uagb-blockquote__content\"><em><em><em><em>What makes a structure unique if it allows the building to be expanded, reinforced, or modified in the future with minimal intervention? In the world of steel construction, adding a floor, opening a passageway, or reinforcing a beam are tasks that a specialized team can perform without demolishing anything. <\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/div><footer><div class=\"uagb-blockquote__author-wrap uagb-blockquote__author-at-left\"><\/div><\/footer><\/blockquote><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"margin-top:38px\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\">ERROR No. 5:<\/mark> <strong><strong><strong><strong>Ordering the structure without planning where the utilities will be routed<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is, perhaps, the mistake that causes the most frustration on a construction site. And it&#8217;s also the most preventable. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The classic scenario goes like this: the structural work is completed, the HVAC or plumbing crew arrives, and discovers that the beams or floor slabs are blocking the ductwork. <strong>Someone has to start chipping away, drilling, or improvising<\/strong>. The site manager argues with the contractors, unexpected cracks or structural weaknesses appear, and no one takes responsibility. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem isn&#8217;t anyone&#8217;s bad faith. It&#8217;s the lack of a detailed engineering process prior to the start of construction. If the structure hasn&#8217;t been modeled in 3D with the systems incorporated into it before anything is manufactured, a clash is practically inevitable.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Construction systems that <strong>require all the geometry to be determined before fabrication<\/strong>\u2014because there\u2019s no room for improvisation in the workshop\u2014are the ones that arrive on-site without any surprises. The beams can be produced with the necessary pipe passages and cavities already in place, all perfectly calculated. Utility lines run cleanly through the structure, without any notches or modifications.  <\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-blockquote uagb-block-3c948ac5 uagb-blockquote__skin-border uagb-blockquote__stack-img-none\"><blockquote class=\"uagb-blockquote\"><div class=\"uagb-blockquote__content\"><em><em><em><em><em>This is a good example of how the \u201crigidity\u201d of the workshop process is, in fact, a huge advantage: it forces you to think everything through before building. And that is exactly what sets apart a project that is completed on time from one that sparks arguments right up until the very last day. <\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/div><footer><div class=\"uagb-blockquote__author-wrap uagb-blockquote__author-at-left\"><\/div><\/footer><\/blockquote><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"margin-top:30px\">In rigid systems, any future modification involves costly construction work, structural uncertainty, and, in many cases, the decision not to proceed. The building is effectively frozen in time. <\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-10f85894 alignfull uagb-is-root-container\"><div class=\"uagb-container-inner-blocks-wrap\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-1e54eb49\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong>What These Five Mistakes Have in Common<\/strong><\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-cyan-bluish-gray-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-277226d2d468b62e4adddfc279558b30 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"margin-bottom:-10px\">None of them appear in the initial budget. They all show up later, once the project is already underway and making changes is very difficult or impossible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-cyan-bluish-gray-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-c7be9286f1c0efab3965165bde1bc47c wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"margin-bottom:-10px\">The good news is that all of these issues are preventable. The key isn\u2019t in choosing the cheapest or best-known supplier.
